Summer Associates Program

Overview

CB&S's Summer Associate Program is a vital part of our approach to recruiting top law school candidates for beginning associate positions.  Our program is designed to showcase the culture at CB&S, to evaluate prospective new attorneys and to provide an overview of the lifestyle Chattanooga offers. Our program operates in two six-week sessions:  1) mid-May through late June; 2) end of June through early August.

The program begins with orientation and training sessions. We encourage our Summer Associates to choose assignments in their area of interest but also to expose themselves to as many areas of the law as possible.  We pair each Summer Associate with a mentor attorney during the six-week session.  Summer Associates have the opportunity to attend court, depositions, client meetings, in-house planning sessions, corporate and civic luncheon events, and community involvement projects.

Our program also provides many opportunities to get to know CB&S attorneys and staff in social settings outside of the office.  Each year a schedule of events will be circulated. Past events have included the CB&S Golf Tournament, Lookouts Baseball Game and Cookout, Whitewater Rafting on the Ocoee, Casino Night, and other spontaneous social hours.

CB&S hires both first and second year students for its Summer Associate Program.  Our salary is competitive, and we also provide free parking. We base our hiring on several criteria including the following:

  • Strong Academic Record
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Strong interest to reside in the Chattanooga area.

How many Summer Associates do you typically hire?
CB&S’s Summer Associate Program is dynamic, so we do not hire a pre-set number of Summer Associates each year.  In 2010, we will host 12 Summer Associates.

What type of work will I be doing as a Summer Associate?
Attorneys post assignments through the firm’s computer system and Summer Associates are allowed, for the most part, to choose the assignments that interest them.  Assignments are categorized by area of law, type of work product and estimated completion time.  Typical assignments include research, preparing memos, and drafting pleadings, contract, wills and other documents.  Summer Associates are also encouraged to attend court, depositions, client meetings, will signings, and other activities.

What are the compensation and benefits for Summer Associates?
Our compensation for Summer Associates is competitive with other Chattanooga firms and varies from year to year.  Our firm also provides Summer Associates free parking during their six-week stay.

Does CB&S offer help finding Summer Housing?
Our Recruiting Coordinator will assist any Summer Associates who need to locate temporary housing.
